Wretched Heart is the fifth studio album by the Canadian band Spell, released on May 1, 2026, by Bad Omen Records. Originating from Vancouver, Spell cultivates a self-described "hypnotic heavy metal" sound—a personal and evolving approach to classic heavy metal, incorporating gothic, cinematic, psychedelic, and hard rock elements without adhering to traditional or regressive formulas.

The album represents the band's most mature and confident point to date. It emerges as a natural continuation of Tragic Magic (2022), deepening the gothic and dark nuances present in the previous work, but with greater emotional emphasis, human urgency, and a celebration of individuality and eccentricity.

Wretched Heart is described as a "dark journey through despair, passion, and defiance." The album transforms heavy metal into something urgent and profoundly human: gothic, cinematic, and hypnotic.

Musically, the album favors mid-tempo structures, hypnotic bass and drum foundations, layers of melodic guitars (with rich harmonies and fiery solos), synthesizers that create gothic and cinematic textures, and a theatrical sense without falling into empty technical excesses. The focus is on the atmosphere and identity of the band, more than on speed or pure virtuosity.

Classic influences (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Blue Öyster Cult, Rush, Pink Floyd) blend with gothic elements (The Mission, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Theatre of Tragedy, Paradise Lost) and modern/hypnotic touches (synthesizers reminiscent of Ghost or even Kraftwerk/Daft Punk-style vocoders in the title track). The result is a heavy metal that "converses" with traditions without surrendering to clichés, creating something cohesive, refined, and emotionally resonant. Reviews highlight tracks like "Iron Teeth," "Dark Inertia," and the title track as peaks of darkness, melody, and theatricality.

The production, handled by Felix Fung (recorded at Little Red Sounds in New Westminster, BC, between March and October 2025, and mastered by Greg Mindorff), reinforces the immersive and organic character, with room for subtle details such as distant howls, rhythmic layers, and dramatic breaks.

Special appearances include a guitar solo by Tom Draper (ex-Spirit Adrift, Carcass, Angel Witch) on "Lilac," screams by Nicole 'Trish' McDonal and backing vocals on "Iron Teeth," among others. The cover art is a painting by Adam Burke, with photography by Caitlin Delaplace and graphic design by Annick Giroux.

Initial reviews praise Wretched Heart as Spell's strongest work, highlighting its atmospheric cohesion, clear identity, and ability to evoke emotion without prioritizing pure aggression. It's not an album for those seeking only speed or rigid tradition, but rather for those who appreciate aesthetic construction, dark melody, and a human approach to heavy metal. The band, which declares itself anti-fascist and anti-capitalist, reinforces its outsider stance through courageous lyrics and constant evolution.

In short, Wretched Heart is a mature, hypnotic, and emotionally charged album that solidifies Spell as one of the most interesting and personal voices in contemporary heavy metal—a "spell" of steel with a very human heart, perfect for long, reflective nights.
