Rock’n’Roll Survivor – My Bipolar Life with Bonfire is a deeply personal, autobiographical feature film about Hans Ziller – guitarist, songwriter, and founder of the internationally successful rock band Bonfire – and his lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder.

It is a story about music, madness, سقوط and resurrection. And about a society that still doesn’t know how to deal with those who are different.

Hans grows up in a conservative Bavarian village with only 300 inhabitants. At the age of twelve, his life changes forever when he sees Jimi Hendrix on television. From that moment on, music becomes his obsession, his escape, his identity. But his dream of becoming a musician is met with misunderstanding, rejection, and an invisible illness no one recognizes: Hans is bipolar.

In his manic phases, he enters states of creative ecstasy, composing music as if possessed. In his depressive phases, life turns into a nightmare of isolation and despair.

The film moves fluidly across time and layers of reality: from his childhood to the early days of Bonfire, from international tours and record deals to moments of total collapse in psychiatric institutions. There, in visionary sequences, Hans encounters other “bipolar spirits” – from Vincent van Gogh and Ludwig van Beethoven to Winston Churchill.

In a central dream sequence, he finds himself in Rock’n’Roll Heaven – an imagined club in the afterlife where his idols, including Eddie Van Halen, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Janis Joplin, speak to him and give him strength.

Caught between mental illness and heightened imagination, between stage lights and isolation, between rebellion and breakdown, Hans fights for his dignity, his voice – and ultimately his life.
