Gustavus Adolphus became King of Sweden in 1611 and transformed the nation into a major European power. In response to the growing threat from Catholic forces during the Thirty Years’ War, he led Sweden to a pivotal victory at the Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631. Drawing on the military strategies of Maurice of Nassau and Wallhausen, he modernised his army with effective pike-and-shot tactics, strong cavalry, and mobile artillery. Beyond the battlefield, Gustavus championed enlightenment ideals and opposed tyranny. As he prepared for the decisive Battle of Lützen, he remained driven by values of courage, wisdom, and a desire to leave a lasting legacy.
