PRESENTATION :

ENG : Formed in 1988 in Centereach, Long Island, Suffocation rose from a blue-collar suburban environment steeped in NYHC energy, where the hardcore scene's confrontational breakdowns gave a young generation the raw material to build something far more extreme.

Effigy of the Forgotten (1991) rewrote the rules: hyper-dense syncopated riffing, subterranean gutturals, and — above all — mid-tempo slam breakdowns lifted straight from the hardcore pit. That collision of mathematical precision and mosh-pit physicality was entirely new.

Dying Fetus, Internal Bleeding, Pyrexia, and eventually the entire deathcore wave (Whitechapel, Thy Art Is Murder, Despised Icon) all trace back to Suffocation's grammar of slams and blast beats. The deathcore genre is simply unthinkable without them. After Pierced from Within (1995), the band went into hiatus before their massive return in 2003 : a genuine creative resurgence, confirmed by the self-titled album (2006) and Blood Oath (2009).

Point of origin for slam-death, cornerstone of technical death metal, unwitting godfathers of deathcore...Suffocation is not a legacy act, it's a living standard. This raw, visceral, clinical, powerful, and vicious live performance proves it all, enhanced by director Christophe Garnier’s dynamic editing (he clearly had a blast).

FR : Fondé en 1988 à Centereach, sur Long Island, Suffocation émerge d’un milieu ouvrier de banlieue imprégné de l’énergie du NYHC, où les breakdowns provocateurs fournissent la matière première pour construire quelque chose de bien plus extrême.

Effigy of the Forgotten (1991) ré-écrira les règles : des riffs syncopés hyper-denses, et des breakdowns slam mid-tempo. Cette collision entre la précision mathématique et la sauvagerie du moshpit était tout à fait nouvelle.

Après Pierced from Within (1995) et avant son grand retour, le groupe a fait une pause jusqu'en 2003 : la renaissance créative est sévère et n'a cesse de s'affirmer, album après album.

Point de départ du slam death metal, pierre angulaire du tech-death, parrains involontaires du deathcore...Suffocation n’est pas un groupe de légende, c’est une référence vivante. Ce live nerveux, viscéral, clinique, puissant et vicieux le prouve très bien, magnifié par le montage dynamique du réalisateur Christophe Garnier, qui, clairement, s'est bien amusé.
